According to ATTOM Data Solutions' most recent affordability report, Q1 of 2018 showed a big dip in housing affordability, with median home prices in 68% of U.S. counties being unaffordable for average wage earners. To put it into numbers: the national median home price is $229,500 and requires an annual income of $57,000 to be considered "affordble". Unfortunately, the average annual U.S. wage is $54,827.
